Using the Pilot Benefit Review Board for disputes
Last updated: 2026-01-11
The PBRB Process
The Pilot Benefit Review Board (PBRB) is a dispute resolution option available to FedEx pilots for certain benefit issues.
What Is PBRB?
The PBRB is:
- A joint committee of pilots and management
- Established through the collective bargaining agreement
- An alternative to litigation for benefit disputes
- Specific to FedEx pilots
PBRB procedures may change with contract negotiations. Verify current procedures with ALPA or the Master Executive Council.
When to Use PBRB
Appropriate Issues
PBRB may be used for:
- Disputes over benefit calculations
- Interpretation of benefit plan language
- Disagreements with Hartford on offset calculations
- Policy interpretation questions
Not Appropriate For
- Initial claim denials (use Hartford appeal first)
- EDD/SDI issues (state process, not PBRB)
- Issues outside the benefit plan
- Employment disputes
PBRB vs. Other Options
| Option | Best For | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Hartford Appeal | Initial denials | 180 days to file |
| PBRB | Calculation/interpretation disputes | Varies |
| ERISA Lawsuit | Final resort after appeals | 2-3 years |
