How CA SDI Works

California State Disability Insurance (SDI) is a state-mandated partial wage-replacement program funded by mandatory payroll deductions. For FedEx pilots based in California, it is the short-term benefit layer that the Hartford LTD plan offsets dollar-for-dollar.

The Basics

2026 SDI Rates

Item2026 Value
SDI Tax Rate1.3% of ALL wages
Maximum Weekly Benefit$1,765
Maximum DurationUp to 52 weeks
Tax CapNone (uncapped since 2024)
Prior to 2024, SDI taxes were capped at a maximum taxable wage. Starting January 1, 2024, there is no cap. You pay SDI tax on 100% of your California wages regardless of earnings level.

Note on coverage: SDI deductions are a function of working in California, not your state of legal residence. Even if you live outside California, if you are based here, you pay into and are covered by SDI.

How Benefits Are Calculated

Your weekly benefit is calculated as:

Weekly Benefit = (Highest Quarter Wages in Base Period ÷ 13) × 70%

The "base period" is the 12-month window EDD uses to assess eligibility and set your benefit rate:

Claim FiledBase Period
January - MarchOct (2 years prior) through Sep (1 year prior)
April - JuneJan through Dec (1 year prior)
July - SeptemberApr (1 year prior) through Mar (current year)
October - DecemberJul (1 year prior) through Jun (current year)

Example:

  • Filing claim in February 2026
  • Base period: October 2023 through September 2024
  • Highest quarter: $95,000
  • Weekly benefit: ($95,000 ÷ 13) × 0.70 = $5,115 → capped at $1,765/week
The base period lags by 5–17 months. If you had a low-income quarter or a leave of absence during that window, your benefit will be lower — or you may fail the $300 minimum earnings test — even though your current pay is high.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for CA SDI, you must:

  1. Employment Status: Be employed at the time your disability began.
  2. Medical Certification: Be unable to perform your regular work for at least 8 consecutive days.
  3. Earnings: Have earned at least $300 during your base period (from which SDI deductions were withheld).
  4. Under Care: Be under the care of a licensed physician during the first 8 days of disability.
  5. Filing Deadline: File your claim within 49 days of the date your disability began.
As an airline pilot, you cannot perform "modified duty." Any restriction that prevents you from holding a first-class FAA medical and flying the line is a full disability for SDI purposes — there is no partial disability category.

The EDD Connection

EDD's system was designed for W-2 employees with consistent monthly paychecks. Pilot pay structures — variable flight pay, per diem, premium pay, sick pay that looks identical to regular pay on paystubs — routinely generate EDD information requests and processing delays. Plan for a 2–6 week lag even on clean claims; complex or flagged claims can run longer.

How Long Does It Take?

MilestoneTypical Timing
Day 0Last day worked / disability begins
Days 1–7Non-payable waiting period
Day 8+File as soon as eligible
Days 1–14Physician certifies claim
Days 14–21EDD reviews; may request additional information
Days 21–28Eligibility determination
~Day 28+First payment issued (if approved)
Every 2 weeksContinued claim certification required
EDD frequently requests additional documentation from pilots due to complex pay structures. File on day 8 — do not wait for your sick bank to run out — and follow up if you have not received an eligibility notice within 3 weeks.
