Why This Guide Exists
The motivation behind creating this resource for FedEx pilots
Why This Guide Exists
Every pilot who has navigated the CA SDI process has had to figure it out largely from scratch. This guide exists to change that.
The Problem
When you become disabled as a California-based FedEx pilot, you face:
- No official documentation written specifically for pilot claims — EDD materials assume W-2 employees with simple pay structures
- Two non-coordinating bureaucracies — EDD and Hartford each process independently; neither alerts you to problems in the other's system
- Time pressure — the 49-day SDI filing deadline does not pause while you recover
- Financial exposure — a 2–3 month EDD processing delay can cost $14,000–21,000 in offset income (see The Offset Problem)
Each pilot who has gone through this process has spent dozens of hours on calls, made avoidable errors, and eventually found workarounds — then moved on without leaving a record for the next pilot. This guide captures that institutional knowledge.
What This Guide Provides
- Step-by-step filing procedures validated against EDD's actual processing workflow
- Common pitfalls: base period traps, the expected-SDI offset, physician certification timing
- Templates for common EDD and Hartford communications
- Calculator to model your SDI benefit, LTD benefit, and offset exposure
- Checklist to track your claim status across both systems
Who Is This For?
Currently Disabled
Use the Checklist to identify your phase, then go directly to the relevant guide section. Use the Calculator to verify Hartford's offset math against your actual SDI award.
Anticipating a Disability
- Read Preparation now, before you need it
- Gather the documents listed in What to Save
- Understand your sick bank balance — LTD eligibility and the SDI filing window both depend on it
Healthy Pilots
Since 2024, you pay SDI tax on 100% of your California wages with no cap. A senior captain pays $5,000–8,000+ per year for this coverage. Know how it works before you need it.
Limitations
- Not legal advice: Consult an attorney for legal questions
